Ok, a couple of you should have replies asking for clarification, but here are the answers to the rest of the prompts I've gotten thus far:

Those Five Things... )
cybermathwitch: (Default)
NaNoWriMo does strange things to the soul.

The first time that I delved into it's exhilarating, frightening, unknown waters (and if you've never done it, it really is a bit like diving off a pier at midnight into a body of water you've never seen) was probably around 2000. I think that I wrote maybe 1000 words, if that much on a very random whim without really understanding a thing about what I was trying to do. At the time, I had no sense of the actual scope of the thing, or of the idea of pacing myself and therefore I also didn't really put myself into it.

In 2003, I revisited the idea, this time with a plot bunny I'd gotten from a friend of mine. By that time, I'd moved on from college and was working at a 40-hour a week job, and was coming down from a several-week-long panic attack (bordering on nervous breakdown). That's the year I really think of as my first foray into the actual heart of the project, and while I made a bunch of the beginner mistakes (like not sticking to a daily word count) I also managed about 40,000 of the cherished 50,000 word goal.

I think in 2004 I suffered from a total lack of any inspiration, and in 2005 I was between jobs, inspiration-less, and in the middle of having problems with mental illness that sapped any creative energy I possessed. But 2006? 2006 was the year I discovered Battlestar Galactica, and had my fandom muses renewed. It was also the first year that I made it to 50,000 words (some of which got written in a fugue state that had me going back later and thinking "when did I write that?!" but in a good way.)

It was still a solitary endeavor (complete with askance looks from friends and family at ever mention of it). In 2007, I managed to coerce [livejournal.com profile] kadollan into participating with me, and we both wrote Harry Potter fic. Because the word count goal in and of itself was no longer challenge enough, I decided that I should attempt (for the first time ever in my life) to exert some self-discipline and stick to the daily prescribed word count of 1667 words. I actively bribed myself with the promise of silk yarn from Blue Moon Fiber Arts and kept pictures of both said yarn and Luna Lovegood (my central character and newly discovered muse) on my desktop at work. And you know what? I did it. I absolutely did.

So last year, it was Harry Potter again, only it wasn't at first because [livejournal.com profile] the_disco_fairy tried to talk me into original fiction. That failed like a fail-y thing, because I caught [livejournal.com profile] kadollan's HP Next-Gen bug, but I tried to do two at once for awhile, because I was unemployed again, and why not? I ended up with an unholy (and really awfully close to cheating) union of the two by the end of things (along with a 60,000+ word count).

So at some point, I got to be the sort of writer who says "15,000 words? That's easy!" and means it. It's a realization I had going into the [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang this year. The hell? I can see how I got there, but it's still a surprise, kind of.

And all those fics that I've written for NaNo that have never seen the light of day? I'm using the [livejournal.com profile] ginnybigbang and [livejournal.com profile] harrypotterbang as an excuse to get them finished, edited, and posted.

The [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang and [livejournal.com profile] polybigbang are going to be new endeavors, like the [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang is. And I think that the [livejournal.com profile] hermionebigbang just might be what's leading into this year's NaNo storyline.

There's also the [livejournal.com profile] harrypotterbang, which is pretty much anything-goes HP-themed Big Bang, and [livejournal.com profile] polybigbang which is a multi-fandom polyship-themed Big Bang.

I'm already signed on as an Author and a Mixer for the [livejournal.com profile] startrekbigbang.

I know it *sounds* like I'm a crazy person, but really, half of these are going to be pieces that I've got a big chunk of sitting on my harddrive, just waiting for an excuse to see the light of day.

(Really, this is a tricky trick on my life to get the universe to provide a job that will make all of these fic obligations a million times harder. Murphy's Law and all, you know. ;) )

Btw:

Final NaNo count: 64,928.

As previously mentioned, I learned a few important things.  First, that I should always stick to doing a daily word count when doing NaNoWriMo.  Second, that my place in this literary world (at least in regards to fiction) is writing fanfiction, not original stuff.  I actually had quite an epiphany about how exactly it is that my brain works that allows me to write fanfiction (it's related to mathematics and social dynamics, and came to me via reading this wonderful book (which is well written and quite engaging and not at all about genetics: The Math Gene by Keith Devlin) )  It involves imaginary "furniture" in imaginary "houses" among other things.

Speaking of NaNo stories... I have two needs.  Or rather, I have two stories that I really would like to finish and make into post-able stories, and would like beta-ish help on them.  If you're interested?  Please let me know either via comments or email. (cybermathwitch (at) gmail (dot) com)

Folie a Deux is a BSG Kara/Lee epic-y sort of story involving the two of them "remembering" all sorts of different lives past, future, and alternate present in order to come to a realization about their place in one another's life.  (And doesn't that sound all sorts of philosophical? giggle  Don't worry - there's smut, too.  and Pilot!Babies.)

Fade and Remain is a Harry/Ginny/Luna fic (seriously, check out [livejournal.com profile] flamingnargle ) that takes place after the events of Deathly Hallows (it's cannon up to that point, with some supposition about what's going on during the books that we may not see) and disregards the Epilogue entirely.  It's primary purpose is a vehicle for the 'ship, but I'm also trying to work out an actual plot involving the Elder Wand.

Both of these have at *least* 50,000 words in them, so they're already pretty big (and a big mess, technically as they were written in a sort of "free-for-all" manner) - right now what I really need for these is a new perspective about where I might need to go with them, as well as some reaction to what I've already got.  Grammatical editing is always appreciated, but it isn't the primary thing I'm looking for in a beta - *especially* at the stage I'm at.  I'm going mostly for story editing at this point.

First, and please keep in mind that I do this with a great deal of trepidation,

The first 10 people to comment on this post get to request a drabble on a subject/character of their choosing from me. In return, they have to post this in their journal.

Fandoms within which I have muses (or have ever *had* muses) are as follows (and I'm not trying to be persnickety guys - the stuff I'm excepting here I simply haven't seen):
X-Files (a tiny little slice of it, anyway - and particularly Wintersong's AU world of "Lost", "Found" and "Alphas")
Buffy (seasons 1-3)
Roswell
Farscape (anything season 1-3)
LotR MOVIEVERSE, and no LoTRips
Harry Potter
Doctor Who Circa 9-10. ::cuddles her new lovely::
Lost (Season 1 only)
Witchblade (Season 1)
Charmed (Seasons1-4)
X-Men
Anita Blake
Eve Dallas

In other news:

my car is dead. There was a wreck, and she didn't survive. :(

my hours at work are very sparse - I can't decide if it's a good thing or a bad thing. Good in that I have to spend less time there. Bad in that it's less pay.

Dr. Who is my new crack. Blame [livejournal.com profile] black_magdalene.

The DaVinci Quest on Google is my other new crack. Love it. Want to win a replica cryptex, damn it.

My birthday is in 3 days. My family has all chipped in to get me an ipod. I have to decide what to name said ipod. (I'm currently leaning towards Rose. I'm a fangirl. Shut up.)

If anyone were to be curious as to what to get me for said birthday, ipod-type accessories (fm receiver, fm transmitter, etc. etc. etc.) (except for those knitted sock-let things, cause I can make those) would be welcome - as would La Femme Nikita DVDs. Or whatever really. I'm not really interested in getting music off of Itunes though, because their proprietary format sucks.

(I'm amused that I can spell "proprietary" correctly, but not "receive" or "different".)

Imps or bottles from Black Phoenix Alchemy Labs wouldn't go amiss either. ;)

We're still trying to move. We have until the end of June... I'm not sure we're going to get it done the way we want to. I don't *WANT* to live with boxes stacked to the ceiling anymore... but I'm also too damn depressed and tired to do anything other than.

:(

Well, off to go see if I can find some Doctor Who vids...

OT3 anyone? ;)

PS - LJ paid time wouldn't be turned down... ::blatant hint... hint... hint...::

Yes, yes I have beaten IE into submission. I have *GOT* to get Firefox. Gah.

Not thrilled with the bloody emmys. Well, ok, I lie - I'm ecstatic that Naveen and Terry got noms, and that there were many lots of sci-fi show noms in general. The three issues I have with it are a. HOW THE BLOODY FRELL DOES PKW ONLY GET ONE NOM? Come *on* people - even if it didn't have the "best" prosthetics come Emmy night, how does it not even get NOMINATED? (Only one category among many that they got robbed on.) b. 93 nominations? I know that HBO does good stuff, even if I don't have the channel and don't get to watch the shows - but dude! That's almost as many as two network stations put together! One category has nothing *BUT* HBO movies in it. ::boggles:: c. The lack of fictional TV show categories. Reality TV has at least two different category *types* for best show. But they don't divide Drama into more than one category. Which is ridiculous, IMO. Thank god Desperate Housewives is considered a comedy.

So, in other news (ie, life as I know it - mundanely): serious financial issues. Several checks decided to dress-up as red rubber balls. ::headdesk:: Luckily, Brian worked some this week w/ Jim on a woman's house (doing dry-wall) and got paid. (I don't get paid 'til *next* friday.) Lemme put it this way - I went on Amazon yesterday and tried to cancel my pre-order HBP. 'Cause I couldn't afford it. (It was too late though.)

I adore my future father-in-law. Brian called him to see if we could have/borrow $20 so that I could get gas to go to work (the tank is currently in the lite-bright "empty" status). He said ok, and came over when he was done with work. Instead of pulling out a 20, he brought us $100. No, really. He said that part of it was the gas money, part of it was because he hadn't actually gotten us a hand-fasting/betrothal present yet (not that we'd actually asked anyone for anything, cause we hadn't), and that the rest was because he remembered what it was like starting out and being really, really, really broke.

Suffice it to say, I now have enough to deposit into the bank that it'll take care of the overdrafts, the fuck-you-fees *from* the overdrafts, and enough in the black so that when Amazon charges me for the book that it'll go through w/o a problem (I think). Brian's got one more check that needs to be cashed, which should take care of gas money middle of next week when I need it, and groceries. (We have food in the house - it's just the little odds and ends like oh, say, milk to *make* the mac and cheese we have several boxes of that was gonna be tricky. This way we don't have to worry about that.)
