The Unpopular Fannish Opinions Meme

Gakked from just-about-everywhere:
I think that Buffy should have ended at the end of season 3. While I generally agree that (based on technique) their best episodes were in later seasons, I really didn't like where the show went and how they did it past that point.
I didn't actively dislike Dr. Horrible - but I didn't really like it much, either.
I love So You Think You Can Dance and America's Next Top Model, as well as several of the early years of The Real World
I adored Jonas on SG1.
I love baby!fic and kid!fic.
I hate portmanteaus in fandom. They make me twitchy beyond belief. I did like the times that fandom had nicknames for different shipper groups though (like in the Roswell fandom, and the very clever "ship" names at FictionAlley).
I like Twilight. I'm on Team Alice though.
I liked John Doggett on X-Files.
I loved seasons 9 and 10 of SG1.
I like Stargate: Atlantis better than Stargate: SG1.
I can't stand Sam/Jack, and adore Sam/Daniel.
I don't have any use for Zhaan.
While I often write EWE fic, I happen to love the Epilogue at the end of Deathly Hallows.
I love the direction the Anita Blake books have gone and Incubus Dreams is my favorite.
I have watched and am pretty decently versed in Babylon 5, but I have real trouble dealing with the overly done style of it. I know that J Michael Straczynski did it on purpose to try to emulate an operatic style, but it bugs me.
I like Eliza Dushku, quite a bit, but I don't think she was the best choice for the lead in Dollhouse. (I have a whole rationale behind that but it would be it's own journal post I think.)
I can't fathom Kirk/McCoy
I think that Joss Whedon is a very, very good creator/writer/director, but I don't think he's head and shoulders above anyone else working in television right now. There are several other people in those categories that I like just as well or better.
I'm really excited about and looking forward to the new Sherlock Holmes. (I wouldn't have thought that would've been an unpopular opinion, but given conversations I've read recently apparently it is.)
I really like Warehouse 13 so far.
So what are your unpopular fannish opinions?

Date: 2009-07-22 01:17 pm (UTC)- Really, really not a fan of Dr. Horrible. Couldn't make it past the first song, actually.
- Portmanteaus are signs of the apocalypse.
- Doggett was cool (but Reyes was cooler, IMO).
- I know exactly what you mean about B5's style. Oy.
- I have never understood the Joss Whedon love.
And wow, a real live Sam/Daniel shipper! ;) I have a feeling I would've shipped them if I had gotten into the show before the fannish juggernaut of Sam/Jack was rolling.
I like baby/kidfic if it is really, really well-done, and if the focus is more on the character(s) who had the kid than the kid itself. (And, for some reason, my hard drive is currently awash in half-finished B5 kidfic, so I guess I can't claim to hate it as much as I used to. I DO NOT UNDERSTAND THIS DEVELOPMENT.)

They really, really are.
I wish I had seen more of Reyes - but I only got to see a few of the first eps of that season. (I think there was college involved in that problem.)
Joss Whedon is probably in my top three list, and I do think he's pretty awesome, and very well-rounded talent-wise. I just don't think he's doing anything extremely above and beyond what a few others out there are doing, also. (Ron Moore, David Kemper, JJ Abrams, etc.) I think that Aaron Sorkin is still my writing god.
I am indeed a real, live, Sam/Daniel 'shipper. I even think that (for the most part) the series supports this - despite Chris Judge's insistence on shoving Sam and Jack together. You should rewatch the show now that fandom has died down quite a bit.
As for kid fic - it honestly depends on the kid if I like one's that focus on them. There are several that I do like - and I'm guilty of writing it, as well. ;)

Date: 2009-07-23 10:34 pm (UTC)I don't think I even made it far enough to figure out the plot. I just remember thinking it was really, really unfunny, and without comedy, it was pointless.
I wish I had seen more of Reyes - but I only got to see a few of the first eps of that season. (I think there was college involved in that problem.)
I liked Reyes and Doggett, and always thought they should've gotten their own spinoff. They were fun when M&S weren't around; they had an interesting, sort of complicated backstory together involving her investigation into the death of his son that could've gone places.
I feel like I ought to love Whedon. I keep watching his stuff, trying to find something that works for me, and it...just leaves me cold. I don't care about any of his characters or about the universes he creates, despite them being perfect on paper for me. (Firefly is sort of an exception, but not entirely. And I think that was entirely due to Nathan Fillion's inherent awesome, because I adore him on Castle.)

Huh! I got the impression from, like, the first half of season one that they were toying with pairing Sam and Daniel, but I figured that with the first appearance of alternate-Sam-married-to-Jack at the end of S1, they'd decided to go with Sam/Jack.
Personally, I totally shipped the alternate Sam and Daniel who didn't know anything about the Stargate program--I think Daniel was an ESL teacher, and I've forgotten what Sam was doing. But I thought they were adorable together.
And back in the real timeline, I loved Daniel/Janet, too, so I guess I would've made a bad Daniel/Sam shipper. *g*

But that would require rewatching the show, which I'm not really sure I can handle. ;)

I tend not to read it if the primary focus is on the child--what I really care about is how the parents' relationship reacts to the presence of the kid. (Otherwise, I kind of feel like there's no point in reading fanfic. I read fic in order to see the characters I love in situations the show never put them in.)

Date: 2009-07-25 10:41 pm (UTC)I think one of the stupidest things that the writers on X-Files did was not retiring the Mulder/Scully storyline at the end of Season 8. They did this *beautiful* set up with Doggett and Reyes in Skinner's office, and then seemed to go right back to all the same old angst instead of the new direction.
I feel like I ought to love Whedon. I keep watching his stuff, trying to find something that works for me, and it...just leaves me cold. I love Firefly, but I think one of the reasons that it looks as good as it does is because it never had a chance to have the inevitable bad episodes, that pretty much any show is prone to ("Jeremiah Crichton" anyone?). And I really do like the characters and universe from Buffy and Angel (up to a point) and I think that Joss does really great things with writing. On the other hand, lots of people rave about Dead Like Me and frankly I don't understand that one's appeal. So yes. I get just not getting into a show.
I am so so so so so so so happy that Castle is coming back. And Nathan Fillion is really one of my favorite actors now.

They did mostly try to go in a Sam/Jack direction, but it really came out looking like Jack had a huge crush on Sam and she really wasn't all that interested. To me, anyway. I much preferred shipping Jack/Janet, myself.

Date: 2009-07-27 01:20 am (UTC)Yes! Yes, yes, yes! ARGH!
I love Firefly, but I think one of the reasons that it looks as good as it does is because it never had a chance to have the inevitable bad episodes, that pretty much any show is prone to ("Jeremiah Crichton" anyone?).
I think I liked it because...they were all adults? Well, not River, but she was definitely not a high school student. And I think I like sci-fi better than fantasy, at least on TV, which is why I liked it better than Angel. I should probably give Dollhouse a shot.
On the other hand, lots of people rave about Dead Like Me and frankly I don't understand that one's appeal. So yes. I get just not getting into a show.
I also tried to like DLM. I managed four episodes, and...it was okay, but nothing I wanted to keep watching. I could see the truth of Bryan Fuller's statement that he'd made two shows (DLM and Wonderfalls) with essentially the same premise so that one could be the sacrificial lamb, but I definitely never liked DLM as much as WF.
I am so so so so so so so happy that Castle is coming back. And Nathan Fillion is really one of my favorite actors now.
Yay Castle!

Date: 2009-07-23 02:26 am (UTC)I haven't ruled out Kirk/Spock, and I totally see the potential. I do think they're soulmates, but that doesn't necessarily mean a romantic/sexual relationship (see Simon and River on Firefly - though there are places that goes sometimes...) Anyway.
I just cannot bring myself to ship McCoy with *anyone*. I love Karl Urban, and when he's not being McCoy (like oh, say, when he's Eomer) I think he's incredibly hot, but I just totally don't find him hot as Bones. Therefore, I'm disinclined to ship him with anyone, I think anyway. Dunnow.

Date: 2009-07-22 04:40 pm (UTC)That seems to be all I'm writing lately. I really don't know why. But, whatever works.
I keep wanting to do this meme but I'm too worried that people will get upset over my opinions.

Date: 2009-07-23 02:29 am (UTC)I was kind of worried too - except that I've been dealing a lot lately with either opening my mouth about them or keeping it shut and just hovering in the background and decided what-the-hell. It is rather nerve-wracking though. I kind of did it in an "I dare you to flame me for it" sort of mindset.

(Canon Holmes was a bit of an emo drug addict asshole, though. I like how this Holmes is a bitchindicular drug addict lovable asshole.)

Date: 2009-07-26 06:25 am (UTC)I hate smoosh ship names INTENSELY and they're even worse in soaps where you get things like "Jam" for Sam and Jason but I do rather like "Conseekadores" for Seeker.
I like Sam/Daniel better than Sam/Jack but I honestly don't see a ship in this show anyway
I think that Joss Whedon's great but he's not GOD. He is more personable than a lot of the other guys and I think that's why everyone tends to deify him.
As for the new Sherlock Holmes it looked really awesome on paper and then I saw the trailer and I dunno anymore...

Date: 2009-08-07 07:49 am (UTC)**I didn't actively dislike Dr. Horrible - but I didn't really like it much, either.**
I ended up clicking off of it halfway through the first song. Never wanted to say anything because everyone seems to love it.
**I love So You Think You Can Dance and America's Next Top Model, as well as several of the early years of The Real World** yup
**I like Twilight. I'm on Team Alice though.** LOL, I didn't
know there WAS a team Alice, but I'm on it if there is!
**While I often write EWE fic, I happen to love the Epilogue at the end of Deathly Hallows.** I don't write, but I sure read it. I never mind if there is epilogue or not, I only care if there is an interesting story.
**I love the direction the Anita Blake books have gone and Incubus Dreams is my favorite.** LOL, good god-- I'm one of her mods. This is something I don't read every day! I might have to have some of the other mods come here and see this... they might not believe me when I tell them! They'll probably think it's an urban legend...
**I'm really excited about and looking forward to the new Sherlock Holmes. (I wouldn't have thought that would've been an unpopular opinion, but given conversations I've read recently apparently it is.)**
Agreed.
So you like Harry Potter, Star Trek, Farscape, Anita Blake...ALICE! Wish I'd found you sooner! :D

Date: 2009-08-07 08:00 am (UTC)No... last time I checked I was real. Mods? Which comm - or am I missing something entirely? (It's very late and prepping for WhedonFest09 is currently nom-ing away on my brain so missing something is quite likely.)
I don't know if there's officially a team Alice, either, but based on the first two books (the teenagers in my life fail me, and haven't managed to locate/hand over the last two Twilight books yet), I think she and Bella make a much better match. Plus, they would've been over and done with the whole "turning" thing awhile ago.
I have actually watched all the way through Dr. Horrible a couple times (and will see it at *least* once again this weekend - see above re: whedonfest) but eh.
Re: Anita - I keep trying to convince others that the sex *is* the plot in the more recent books (when they complain about the sex-to-plot-ratio), but they don't seem to believe me. There is much ::headdesk-ing:: in my world regarding it.
I've gone over and friend-ed you, I hope that's alright!

Date: 2009-08-08 06:34 am (UTC)WhedonFest 09, sounds fantastic.
The fact that the concept of 'Team Alice' is there, I agree. She would have gone straight to the 'I love you, let me kill you' and not horsed around about it.
And I've already friended you for the Hermione Big Bang, so I'm glad you friended back! Good luck with your current fest.

We had a lot of fun. Since it was a Can't Stop the Serenity event (and most of the networking/promoting was on Firefly/Browncoat forums, we were a bit Firefly-heavy this year, but I'm hoping that for next year we can expand on that a bit.
