Firefly Rundown

I wasn't expecting it to be any big thing to me - Kaylee and Inara have so far been my fav characters, along with Wash and Zoe. (Mal comes in close behind them.) But, like "Jaynestown", which I wasn't really thinking I'd be fond of since it was all about Jayne, I ended up really loving it. The insight into Simon/River was great (more on that, and why I'm using a "/" later... it's not *quite* what you think...) and since I've grown fairly fond of Book, I really was worried about him.
But Simon and River were definately the heart and soul of this ep. I think I've finally felt out how I see their relationship, and to me it's like this: they're soul mates. As in the Xena/Gabrielle, Mulder/Scully, or Will/Grace variety (I don't, for the record, classify John/Aeryn as such... but that's a paper topic for another day.). I don't, however, necessarily see their relationship as sexual at all (despite the fact that I, as an only child who knows about being siblings with someone only in theory, don't happen to have any problem with the whole sibling-incest thing. I mean, I 'shipped for Max/Isabel (along with just about any/every other pairing) on Roswell.) But I don't particularly see River and Simon going there, because of their background, if for no other reason. I don't think Simon would let it happen.
That said, I do think they're one of those cases of two souls that *have* to be together, that need each other to exist. There were some *gorgeous* shots of the two of them, such as the entire berry scene. And his final resignation at the end when he climbed up to the stake with her and wrapped his arms around her. Just beautiful. Have I mentioned lately that I *love* Joss Whedon?
Next week looks like it'll be fantastic for several reasons, 1. more River/Simon, 2. break-ins equal teamwork and strategy, which I adore almost above 'shipping.
Oh, and question of the week: what the hell is up with Book!?
