An (incredibly long overdue) Update:
Jul. 18th, 2010 12:45 pmSo... life's been just a little bit crazy. Or, really, more than a bit.
I don't even remember the last time I posted... which kind of sucks. In a nutshell, about the middle of last month, my mother-in-law died. It wasn't unexpected, she's been sick for a really, really long time, but there was much dealing with that, and my husband managed to come down with walking pneumonia at the same time and nearly had to go to the ER because he was coughing so much. He missed a week of school which he's trying to make up now, and there was the fourth of july weekend, and the memorial service, and another memorial service about 3 or 4 hours away that was a weekend trip we had to take, and the beginnings of going through her things (which mostly falls to my husband, his sister, and my bff (who was my MIL's sister), but I'm helping them some.) There was all the usual work things, and more training at work, and general trying to keep a "normal" life together (cooking, laundry, should-be-cleaning-but-I'm-going-to-sleep-now and etc.)... basically, I've been doing a LOT of reading/avoiding/sleeping/being exhausted lately. Before all that, well. There were some of my own health problems (starting to resolve themselves now, yay!) and the general stress and uncertainty that comes from living in a house not your own, in limited space, and without entirely reliable internet access. There's actually some more craziness going on right now, but I'm trying really, really hard not to think about it too much or get too involved in it if I can help it.
I'm working on life though, both online and off. At the moment, I'm in the midst of posting the entries for this year's
pilotsbigbang. I just needed a break for a minute, and thought I might as well do an update.
So... what's up with all of you? Any books or shows or movies I may have missed? (I haven't really been reading my flist or anything all year, either.)

Date: 2010-07-19 12:53 am (UTC)Rachael and I have recently acquired a dog (a 5 year old beautiful mutt of indeterminate origins we renamed Juno--you can see video of her on Rachael's facebook) and are actually looking to buy our first house (!). We've also spent a lot of the last eight months or so co-writing a superhero novel, and are nearing the end of the first draft. So things are going well here.
As for the Land of Fiction, there's a lot of the usual (Doctor Who, which we found a little uneven this season but still awesome in the end...we've been rewatching Firefly), and we recently got hooked on Leverage, which is BRILLIANT. I've been reading a lot of comics (surprise!), including rereading a lot of classic X-Men stories. "The Demon's Covenant" came out a month or two back, which Rachael and I devoured pretty quick--not quite as awesome as "The Demon's Lexicon" but still very cool, and I look forward to the finale of that trilogy. (If you don't know these books, they're by Sarah Rees Brennan, who Rachael knew from Potterfic, and she rocks.) Oh, and Rachael's been watching True Blood recently, which I've caught some of and enjoyed, and we both became surprisingly hardcore fans of "Friday Night Lights" due to a friend's recommendation, and crashed through all four seasons of that in a couple of weeks. Football does little for me, but it's just a great people drama--beautifully written and acted.
What's been doing it for you?

Date: 2010-08-02 01:19 am (UTC)I am somewhat familiar with Sarah Rees Brennan, and keep meaning to borrow the Demon's Lexicon from my bff. Right now though, I'm powering my way through Naomi Novik's Temeraire series (I HIGHLY recommend it! Absolutley fabulous AU fantasy/history wherein the Napoleonic era has dragons.)
Am also watching the LXD on hulu (very cool retake of the Superhero motif via dance, you should check it out as well.)
I still need to catch up on Doctor Who (I am languishing back at the end of Rose's part of things right before the Runaway Bride special) but have just now today made it through the rest of season 1 of Caprica (I know that technically what starts in September is season "1.5" but honestly - if you're going to wait nearly 6 months between new eps that's not a midseason hiatus anymore!).
Congrats on the puppy and possible house! Brian and I are hopefully going to be able to get our own place in November or December when he graduates from massage therapy school. I'd love to have a puppy, but right now we still have the cat and I don't know what she'd think about that one.
I miss you both, too... if y'all ever decide you need a break for a few days, you know you can always come stay/hang out down here. (We could even probably find a place to take care of the dog if you wanted to bring her with.)

Date: 2010-08-02 03:35 am (UTC)Somewhere I have the first Temeraire, and have been meaning to get around to reading it. I've heard only great things, and a friend of ours knows Naomi. It's been a good week for reading, though--at work, I managed to snag a preview copy of the new Vorkosigan novel that comes out in November! Rachael read it in a day, I finished it this morning, and of course it is AMAZING.
We just checked out the first couple of LXD eps, after I saw your rec. Interesting set-up, and the dance rocks! One of the actors is actually a regular on Glee--mostly in the background so far, story wise, with very little dialogue, but he's always stood out as the best dancer on the show. (And Glee is just generally awesome anyway.)
Doctor Who, oh you've got so much awesome left to see! Runaway Bride is where you meet Donna, who comes back later, and is one of my favorite characters ever. In anything. Caprica I haven't seen yet...I've heard some interesting things, but BSG really lost us in the end. *shrugs*
Thanks on the puppy/house! The puppy (she's five years old, but energetic and small enough we still think puppy a lot of the time) is settling in wonderfully, very well behaved and extremely cuddly and loving. The house hunting seems to be going very well too--hopefully we'll have more news on that front in the next few days.
We definitely need to find more time for gatherings. Miss you too!

Date: 2010-07-20 02:03 am (UTC)I am glad things are on the mend for you, and him, however. :)
You haven't really missed a lot that you probably wouldn't see on facebook so far as I know. The larger drama from an individual in the community I imagine you are well aware of.
Outside of that -TWO BABIES !!! Beth and Ben had their daughter. And PJ is now a father as of last Friday.
News for myself- your probably knew - but really just the meeting someone, falling madly in love, taking a whirl-wind trip to PA to see his family and back and all of the drama surrounding that, then coming home and taking him to the airport at 6:30 the next morning and missing him like crazy every day since then.
Now I'm just trying to figure out what I'm going to do with my life again, so the usual. :)

Date: 2010-08-02 01:21 am (UTC)I haven't *quite* dropped off the face of the earth (I'm still hanging on by my fingertips I think!). :) And I just today got caught back up on Caprica. Now if I could just motivate myself to get back into writing again.
