In Conflict

heated

Their latest argument is a heated exchange.  The flight crew watches, not quite sure of what to do, but knowing that the last thing that would be smart would be to get anywhere near the middle of it.

Starbuck is yelling something about it being no big deal, Apollo's throwing down his helmet and pointing at her sharply, and responding with something about reckless idiocy.  Then they're going toe to toe, quite literally, and so close up in each other's faces that they're almost impossible to read.

All anyone else knows is that she did something in the Blackbird, something that freaked Apollo out enough he dropped her call sign and called her Kara up in the air.  Then she showed back up and thought it was all in fun.

But everyone can tell that Apollo was scared.  That Starbuck's important to him - and they've known that for a long time - in ways they can't even understand.  There's a history there they just don't know about.  So they stand back, watch the show, and wonder if this will be the time that the one pushes the other too far.

thrust

She can't remember what they're arguing about, but it's something.  Lee's yelling and she's yelling and she's mostly yelling nonsense at this point, about him having a stick up his ass and needing to loosen up and get off his high horse - the usual lines she falls back on when she's too busy watching him get angry to pay attention to what she's supposed to be angry about.

He says something about her breaking the rules and thinking she can get away with it just because she's good on the stick and she remembers what started this round.  An ill-timed comment about an archaic regulation - the frat regs, she thinks, the ones that no one has paid attention to since the worlds ended - including Lee, because there was that almost-time in the bunk room - and he's in just the kind of mood that her standing within ear shot and saying that something doesn't or shouldn't apply to her gets her busted.

"Just stop it, Starbuck," she hears him say, and thinks it's probably a bad sign that he's still using her call sign and not her given name, "you can't keep pushing me like this."

"Why the hell would you think I was trying to push you?  Apparently you need an ego check, Apollo," she retorts,  because she can't be the first to call him Lee.  His hands grab her upper arms hard enough to bruise (which thrills her just a little) and he slams her back against the bulkhead.  Her head rocks backwards, hard enough she sees stars.

"You're always trying to push me, Kara." There it is, she thinks with satisfaction, "Some days I think you just want to see what it'll take to push me over the edge."  His voice has dropped now, it's quieter and lower and infinitely more dangerous.  She meets his eyes and sees that he's no longer really in control, which excites her.  "Is that what you want?  To push me too far?  To see what it is that I'll do to you?"

She's never been one to shrink back from pulling the tiger's tail.  "Maybe.  Maybe I keep pushing because I don't think that you can  go over."

She watches something snap in his mind through his eyes.  Then she's feeling his fingers and hands as he's tearing at her clothes and at his own.  He keeps her pinned against the wall with is weight while he unfastens the pants of his dress uniform and jerks her sweats down her hips.  Then he's flipping her over so she's face first against the wall and is wrenching one of her arms around to pin it against the small of her back.  She feels strong wild fingers clench into her hip and then she feels his cock against her ass as he tries to find her entrance.  He abandons his grip on her wrist to spread through her folds and finds that she's incredibly hot and wet.  He lines up and thrusts into her, and she's pushing back against him, meeting him thrust for thrust.

It's over quickly, and he backs away even faster.  He looks at her with something like horror in his eyes at what he's just done, but she smiles this slow smile and he realizes he's just done exactly what she wanted him to do.  That the argument was just a ruse, and a way to make him angry enough with her to forget he's supposed to be the good soldier.

foreplay

He realizes, a few weeks after they start sleeping together, that they have an unusual form of foreplay.  It takes that much time, because they've been doing it for so long, long before the sex, that it seemed like the normal routine.

She picks fights with him.  She does little things, breaks little rules when she knows he's watching.  She stirs up trouble - not bad, just mischievous - when she knows he'll have to deal with it.  She talks back to him, stands up to him, and will flip him off when she feels like it just to get a rise out of him.  And she does, in more ways than one.  The challenge of her, the frustration of having to deal with her is suddenly easier, more manageable now that it's sexual.  He realizes that it's always been sexual, actually, it's just that they used to work themselves up playing off of each other without having any kind of release.  It's no wonder, really that they used to end up in the sparring ring beating the crap out of each other under the paper thin guise of "working out" or "practicing".

Now they end up in the bed in his quarters, wrestling across the sheets, twisting against each other, biting and scratching and generally working out their aggression in much more mutually satisfactory ways.  It's much better than sparring and then going to the head for an abbreviated self-generated release.  He likes it better when they find that release together.

Now, whenever she laughs too loudly during a briefing at something that shouldn't even be funny, or she cuts it too close on a maneuver or she walks away from him on the flight deck when he's trying to make a point he still gets the rush of blood to his skin, and other, lower places.  He still heats up and gets angry, but he also knows how it will all end, and sometimes it's kind of hard for him not to smile.

Oh, thanks (have I already told you that I'm really enjoying this? :-) ). I love the third the best (your portrayal of Lee and Kara's dynamics is great!).

Oh these are all very nice too.

There is one little thing that's always been a sticking point for me but one so small I usually just file it in the back of my head as a very minor annoyance when I see it. That is tangentially the reference to the hanger/maintenance deck as the flight deck and more centrally calling the maintenance crew the "flight crew".

I don't know if someone started this in fanfic and everyone else just followed along or it's a canon reference. In reality, flight crew refers to the people that go in the flying things not the ones that work on them. It's generally more prevalent when you are talking about the non-pilots so would more accurately be used for BSG when talking about a Raptor crew than calling Apollo the flight crew of a Viper.

Like I said a relatively minor thing but I'd be curious if it actually has its basis in something I missed in canon or it's just another fanfic thing.

Hmmm... Now I want to go rewatch the mini (which is likely to refer to it at least once) and see if they call it the flight deck or the hanger/maintenance deck. I *want* to say that they do actually refer to it as a flight deck in cannon - however, I *don't* think that they make the mistake of calling it/them the flight crew like I did. (My bad, btw. Will go fix it, and thanks for catching it!)

I tend to be nit-picky about that sort of thing too when I read stuff. And someday, I think I really want to do a paper about the creation of a "fanon" alongside a "canon" in popular worlds.

If they did refer to something as the flight deck it would most likely have been where they landed. Then the ships were towed to an elevator and brought down to the level/deck where they were hangered and maintained. Of course the key difference from a US aircraft carrier being the launch tubes which were obviously on the same level as the maintainence/hanger spaces.

I'd certainly be interested in that paper too. The show does, rightly I think, receive wide acclaim for doing military things right. However, there are so many little things that are off a bit, plus the things they apparently changed on purpose such as the rank structure. That abomination ;) drives me absolutely nuts.

Oh, yeah, these two are just frakked up enough that fighting is foreplay. I do think Kara has a secret agenda to push Lee a little too far one day. It'd be interesting to see if she ever does (on the show). Thanks for sharing!

I don't know if it's conscious on her part or not, but I think it's certainly part of her motives. And I know that their tendency to channel their attraction into conflict is one of the primary reasons I love them so much. ;)
