Okay, question... *g*

What are the lovely things that make you love the Train Job?

I really enjoy the ep, but I've also heard it got bashed a lot (including by Joss) for being rushed, a horrible pilot for new viewers, nonsensical, etc. People wonder how the ship could've flown over the train and NOT been noticed. There's debate over Mal kicking the juy into the engine, if that was too flippant even for Mal, or especially for mal. Etc.

Soooo...this is your chance to refute the bad rap the ep gets!

(Me...I see some of the flaws, but I enjoy the ep enough to overlook them, with only a slight feeling of guilt. :?P)

Upon rewatching it, several times, I think it's one of the most seamless jobs of introducing a group of characters, a world, and an over-arching "net" of plot(s) in under an hour that I've ever seen. I'm *completely* ignoring "nah, that couldn't have happened" re: the ship/train, because honestly, at no point watching that scene did I think that a. it was shown or implied that no one saw it (as far out in the boondocks as they were it wouldn't have mattered, frankly) or b. that I was to assume such.

As to it being a horrible plot for new viewers... um, no, actually - if it weren't for the sheer joy of seeing someone *not* know that Simon wasn't really a Big Bad, I would consider showing it first over Serenity (the ep(s)) again. I do, however, defer as any good fangirl should to the true pilot, but my point being that through visuals (as well as the running diaglogue) we're told who and what these people are w/o it being handed to us like we were idiot children (to paraphrase Simon).

Lemme rewatch it again (it's been a bit) and I'll get back to you with more specific points.

::hugs triplet::

Hmmm, interesting.

Decent point on the flyover. We don't really know how commonly ships fly over trains. And if such 'thrilling heroics' aren't usually how train heists are pulled, folk wouldn't necessarily make the connection.

Very interesting on the introductions. For me...I should've listened when all you Scapers were talking up Firefly before it came out, but I hadn't even gotten into Buffy/Angel at that point...so I didn't see Firefly until DVD. (In fact, by the time I watched it all, I already knew they were making the movie!) I saw the Train Job right after Serenity, and didn't know how it'd play until a complete newbie. I did think it did a fine job of NOT dragging for someone who already knew the crew, though.

And I have to say I LOVE that opening scene, especially Mal's passive aggressive way of starting the fight. I see a lot of myself in Mal, actually...obviously I've not been jaded like Mal, but I think deep down he's still an idealist. (Which is also why I think Mal & Simon are actually a lot alike...and in some ways Mal has kept Simon from ending up quite as jaded as himself.) And Mal's ways of getting angry...slowly bubbling through passive aggression to outright fury...and once he hits the fury, folk who've crossed him don't see the vengeance coming until they're on the ground...that's all rather how my own temper works. :?P Very Scorpio, that...

And wow, I'm babbling. But yes, I do love the ep too. Was just curious how you rated it favorite. *g*

*Hugs triplet back*
