People. I'm breaking over here. Am about to fail my spoiler-free will-save. (Please to ignore the post-ep fics for "The Oath" open in another tab and the screen caps that
ez_as_pi posted that I'm drooling all over.) Usually, I'm like the queen of the spoiler-free peoples. But I wanna click-y the cut-tags SO BAD OMG!
In other BSG-ish news, our coven decided that we didn't really want anything to do with Imbolc. It's perfectly lovely in theory, and has absolutely no emotional or personal (or religious) relevance to any of us, whatsoever. Instead, since it's also the right time for the ancient greek festival of Anthesteria, I opted to do a modified City Dionysia. (City Dionysias being the great big multi-day theatre festivals they used to have. Technically, those weren't part of the Anthesteria celebrations, they were a different observance entirely, but since both are done for/about Dionysus, I went with it.) What we did was all get together and watch - with attention and intention - a movie (I used the BSG mini, because "hullo, tragedy!") to provoke catharsis and exstasis.
Catharsis is defined as:
A purifying or figurative cleansing of the emotions, especially pity and fear, described by Aristotle as an effect of tragic drama on its audience.
A release of emotional tension, as after an overwhelming experience, that restores or refreshes the spirit.
[New Latin, from Greek katharsis, from kathairein, to purge, from katharos, pure.]

Exstasis is essentially an ecstatic state that takes you outside of yourself. So, by watching a play, movie, show, etc (or reading a book, though in my experience it's a little more difficult that way) you experience things along with a character or all the characters, letting go of yourself for awhile. Those two things are central ideas to Dionysian experience and worship. It was mostly a success, if I do say so myself.
Finally, the Caprica pilot movie will be released on DVD in April - news about the release, as well as a link to the trailer is all here and here.
